LIBERTY PLACE, CITY OF LONDON
Liberty Place sees the remodelling and extension of an outdated 1990’s office development in Bishopsgate, just on the edge of The City of London. Sharing a panorama with the Gherkin and Heron Tower, Liberty Place is situated on a prominent location that mediates between the vast scale of The City and the domestic scale of the historic Elder Street Conservation Area. In line with the client’s financial aspirations our approach saw the reuse of the existing concrete structure, wrapped in a new façade.
The existing structure is extended vertically to better mediate between the differing scales of the neighbouring buildings. The office provision includes four upper-level garden terraces, each serving their respective offices.
A soft material palette of hand-thrown yellow/ pink bricks and fair-faced concrete ties in with the palette of the adjoining historic Folgate Street, with bronze trims ornamenting the elevation in the form of windows/ door surrounds and high level terrace pergolas. A complementary palette continues into the building reception - a sculptural black steel girder reception desk is a nod to the area’s industrial heritage.
