LAMBETH NORTH HOTEL, LAMBETH
Situated at the junction of Lambeth Road and Kennington Road and in view of the Grade I Listed Imperial War Museum, Kyson have been commissioned to provide a replacement building for the post-war Lambeth Mission & St Mary’s Church alongside a new Hotel. The massing of the proposal is informed by careful consideration of the scale and proportions of neighbouring buildings, resulting in two separate volumes that form part of a greater composition within this important streetscape.
In façades, both buildings have similar colour tone but varied design languages. The church has referenced arches from ecclesiastical architecture, whereas the hotel has adopted a more contemporary approach of using monolithic masonry piers to emphasise the sense of verticality. Articulation of the façade is informed by creating series of datum levels to break down the formality of the whole façade. As the building level goes up, the façade shifts to become denser with thinner masonry piers to give a more delicate and light structure above the solid base.
